Contakt 'Nobody Else' forthcoming Icee Hot
Contakt (Turrbotax, NY) did an awesome, exclusive mix for Allsorts last year and now he has a new EP dropping next week, April 15, on San Francisco label Icee Hot.
Contakt has previously released music for labels such as Local Action, Grizzly, and Dutty Artz, but this new release - "Nobody Else" and "Tessera 04" - is something of an evolution for him, delivering tunes that are richer and more deeply realized than his past releases.
On the B-side, ICEE HOT resident Ghosts on Tape remixes "Nobody Else" and Detroit legend Robert Hood takes on "Tessera 04". This is a quality release with four uniquely playable offerings. Check it out!
Forthcoming vinyl/digital April 15

Policy 'Everything Hits' forthcoming on Rush Hour
We were fortunate enough to have the brilliant, up and coming, New York-based producer and DJ Policy come in to Allsorts Radio on SubFM last week to do an interview and mix for us, but sadly we had some problems archiving the show. Because of that we quickly rustled up a written interview and got some streams of tunes from his forthcoming album on Rush Hour so that you don't have to miss out! Because that's the sort of lovely people we are here at Allsorts! :)
We understand you've not been making music very long, tell us how you got in to it
Well, I've always been a musician. I started out playing piano, then flute, and then the guitar. Growing up in St. Louis, I was heavily into classic rock. Luckily, I developed a taste for jazz and instrumental music, which I think were important to eventually coming to appreciate electronic music. It wasn't until about seven years ago, when I was active as an independent filmmaker, that I started experimenting with electronic music production for soundtrack scoring purposes. I didn't start regularly producing the kind of music I'm doing now until about late 2009.
How did you hook up with Rush Hour for your forthcoming album?
Back in 2010, I got hooked onto their Direct Current series, and on a whim, I decided to contact them one day. It was probably the second label I'd ever sent demos to. They checked out my Soundcloud page and got back to me the next day asking to reserve a couple of tracks (Disco Report and Lost and Free), both of which will be on the album.
We hear you use a lot of hardware to produce, tell us a bit about your studio set up
My set up is pretty simple, but I do like the hands-on element of hardware. I use an Akai sampler pretty heavily, along with some rack synths. I also use a 4-track cassette recorder, and some effects I've built as part of my chain. In general, I like bringing sounds from outside the computer into my recordings - it's just something I'm used to. Cubase is the software I've used since I got it free with a cheap audio interface years back.
How did you go about writing the album? And did you have a specific idea in mind when you started?
When I first signed to Rush Hour, we discussed making an album, but there wasn't a specific idea that I was to follow. The next year I started trying to work towards completing a set of tracks for the album, but I eventually gave up because it was a lot harder than I had expected. I just kept making tracks as I'd always been, taking a few weeks per track and just kept sending them off to Christiaan. In the end, he had like 40+ tracks to choose from and I think he had a better perspective than me for seeing which tracks went together cohesively.
What music do you listen to at home?
I'm always busy working on my own material, but when I hear music I really like, I'll listen to it over and over for days. So it's easier for me to mention tracks that I've obsessed about over the years, like "Airbag" by Radiohead, "Southern Comfort" by Burial, "All is Full of Love" by Bjork. There's even a random track from the film "The Last Emperor", called "Rain (I Want A Divorce)" by the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, that I got hooked on recently. It's just an extremely moving piece of an amazing soundtrack. Something recent that I can't get enough of is the album "Motor City" by Sand Circles, released on Not Not Fun earlier this year.
Have you always lived in New York? What do you think of the music scene here? And who are some people locally who you find inspiring?
I've lived in NYC since 1997 and had my first club experiences at Twilo. That was ages ago. But I really appreciate that there seems to be an increasing number of events happening and places to hear great underground electronic music. Ever since I started going to Turrbotax in early 2010, I've noticed a difference in the crowds. I love the enthusiasm here. And I think the musical output of this city is really inspiring. When I think of music that is synonymous with the energy of this place, I can't help but think of Falty DL. I've followed him since his first album, and his music actually helped me realize where I might fit in.
What are some of your plans for the future, both project-wise and aesthetically speaking?
After the album, I've got a few 12" releases in the works, on other labels. I'll reveal those in time :)
Check out Policy on his Facebook.

Blind Prophet 'Relying on Luck' EP
Joe Burns, AKA Blind Prophet is a talented, young, NYC music producer and DJ. His signature style can probably be described as Future Garage-esque, peppered with house and techno influences. He's had a string of releases on established labels since he debuted in 2010, such as LS2 and Haunted Audio. For his latest EP 'Relying on Luck', Burns eschews a label release in favour of utilizing the popular Bandcamp site to self-release. The EP is a collection of 6 polished tunes, with punchy beats, moody strings and interesting synth patterns and the EP includes a colab with Kid Smpl and a remix of a tune by Delete called Neva. The EP is a out tomorrow, but you can pre-order now on his Bandcamp here

Kloke - Circuit Theory EP preview
I first met Andy Donnelly aka Kloke in Melbourne a few years back, when he relocated from the UK. Upon hearing his early music – Maki being a favourite of mine – I knew this producer’s star was on the rise. The coming weeks will see the release of his solo EP on Granholme so we thought it would be a great time to reconnect with him to see what he’s up to.
Great to see that Circuit Theory is finally getting a release. How did you get hooked up with Granholme?
Through Martyn basically – I’ve been sending him tracks for a good few years now & he’s always been very supportive of them. When I finished Circuit Theory & To The Rescue –another track on the EP – he passed them onto Graham who runs Granholme & is also involved with 3024, he got in touch and we went from there.
Tell me a little bit about the tunes, your process for writing them and what you use in your studio.
Some of the tracks on the EP were made a couple of years ago now so I don’t really remember specifics… But basically I tend to generate about 10 ideas a week which then get narrowed down to about 1 every 4 months that blossoms into a finished track. So it’s often a slow & painful process! Sometimes there’s a specific vibe I‘m after, other times it’s just nice to start something with no predetermined ideas and a sense of freedom. I’m lucky enough to have a separate studio space at the moment so all my hardware is set up there, but due to time restraints & other responsibilities I tend to do the majority at home.
I noticed on your soundcloud that you make Hunkstep. Great name for a genre! What is Hunkstep exactly?
Ha! You’ll have to ask Granham about that.. I think that’s on the Granholme Soundcloud.. I’ve no idea what hunkstep is – maybe it’s an offshoot of brostep?!
Are you still working with Entrada Recordings? How is that going?
Entrada was always more Leo (Moyza) & Ben’s (Wijay) thing – they just released a couple of things of mine – I did get more involved and we had a few plans in motion but time & money became a factor and it became more of a podcast thing in the end. Maybe it’ll resurface at some point… (note: check here for a radio show that Entrada did with myself and Fiend on KissFM a few years back in Melbourne)
What’s the future hold for Kloke?
Well in the beginning it was like my little dubstep (before the term became associated with moshpit transformers music) side-project which was very much inspired by early Digital Mystikz, the stuff Kode9 was playing & injecting a healthy dose of detroit techno – something which obviously everyone and their dog also jumped on. At the time I had a few other things on the go – bands and stuff, and had spent years experimenting with d&b, techno, house, dub, downbeat stuff etc. So it all just clicked & I realised I could incorporate everything under one roof without it ending up too IDM-y…if that makes sense.. But to answer your question I’m very open-ended about what it can be now – it doesn’t just have to be about techno or ‘bass’ (or hunkstep) or even dance music necessarily. I’ve been making lots of beat-less ambient/textural music recently which I might do as a free download album or something. I think it would all be a bit boring & pointless if I had a definite plan anyway..
Kloke recorded this little EP preview mini-mix.
Circuit Theory will be out on Granholme on June 25th, but you can pre-order it here
